The potential of the Internet in learning
Francis Toyama

As much as I try here to present the advantages that the Internet has to offer for free learning not be able to fulfill that mission, that of the Internet grows and expands every day and today we have a new tool, we have three more tomorrow. The news on the Internet do not stop, they grow quantitatively and qualitatively. But on another side, as well as many new tools appear so many fall into disuse, leaving only those which are really useful and effective.

But before we talk about the tools that the internet offers, talk about what is the internet and what are their Performance Features. What is Internet? According to Wikipedia "the Internet is a conglomerate of worldwide networks of millions of computers interconnected by TCP / IP protocol that provides access to information and all kinds of data transfer. The Internet is a huge network rather than connecting computers, connects people. The Internet is a huge bridge, or rather, are billions of bridges connecting all to all. It is not just a statement of "one to many" (television) and not of "many to one" (e), it is both probably have a statement of "many to many". And that's what the Internet has the most fantastic. It is an unlimited network that connects people around the world.

Everything in the virtual world of the Internet is digital. A scanned object can be edited with extreme ease and move with incredible speed. Images, sounds, text and videos can be scanned. For a digital book the space and time are transcendent. A digital book can be here in Brazil and at the same time in many places in the world. He is virtually unlimited in number of copies. He can travel from a server in England to a computer of a person in Australia and up until a someone else's computer in Canada, all in a few seconds (in fact, copyright on the Internet is a major subject). In internet streaming multidirectional flows of digital objects quickly and effectively.

Then we have the internet? Basically it is a communication channel for digital objects (images, sounds, text and video) of "many to many", between people. The Internet, especially, is a tool of mediation. It represents a possibility of communication and interaction unprecedented. This technological base of the Internet allows the creation of all the tools we now enjoy and the freedom propriciam learning.

I will list a few, and only some, of the basic tools that the Internet offers and that can help us become true apprentices. I am convinced that the correct use of these tools can provide a genuine learning and very rich. Some of these tools are so common and are already part of our everyday digital so (such as e-mail) that we underestimate their true potential. Launch a new look, a look naive and curious about these tools can make the difference between waking and non-learners and researchers forazes clever that exist within us. For many who are already accustomed to the digital life may need a rediscovery of the Internet and its tools easier. The internet is there, properly seize its full potential to benefit their own learning!

E-mail

Basic tool for asynchronous communication (communication that is not done in real time allowing the recipient to read and respond to a message at a time different from when The sender sent it). It is one of the first and most basic tools created on the internet and still one of the most used. It is usually used to exchange text messages, and you can also exchange other files. When used in discussion groups emails allow the exercise of reflection and especially writing. Are digital maps with very high educational value. Do not underestimate the value of e-mail in their learning.
Eg Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! Email.

Discussion Groups

Discussion groups are groups that use e-mail to conferences, debates, exchanges and asynchronous discussions on a particular subject. The participant must have an e-mail private in order to enroll in a group discussion. When you enroll in a group, the User has access to an e-mail itself in that group, by sending a message, all registered participants receive. This allows a "multilog", ie, a dialogue of many to many. There are groups of hundreds and even thousands of participants to discuss a variety of issues.
Example: Yahoo! Groups and Google Groups.

Forums

They have the same goal of the discussion groups but with a difference, they occur at a site on the Internet and not via e-mail. All messages of a forum will be posted on the site of the forum organized and grouped by topics and issues. Each participant may respond to a topic already open or open a new topic by proposing a new subject to be discussed. All messages can be read and answered on the site of the forum. Usually require registration.
Example: Hardware Secrets.

Chat and Video chats

Are sites or software that allows synchronous communication is that, unlike the asynchronous communication in real time where the participants need to be connected simultaneously. Messages are exchanged Snapshot of texts (chats) or images and sounds (video-chats) via webcam and microphone. The video-chat function as phones where you can see the person you're talking. Clearly one disadvantage of chat and video chats: Do not let the "multilog" in an organized and efficient when there are many participants. Even the video-conferences allow communication with a reduced number of participants, as many participants as video-conferences usually take the form of communication "one to many". Since the discussion groups and forums, because they are asynchronous, allows participation of up to millher of participants.
Example: Chat UOL and Terra chat.

Blogs

Blog is a kind of personal online diary. You create a blog on any subject and put your mail daily or at longer intervals, preferably regular. Any reader of your Blog can add comments to your posts allowing a minimal interaction.
Ex: Blog do Juca Kfouri, Blogger (for creating a Blog).

Wikipedia

It is an encyclopedia compiled in different languages where all readers can edit their content. The ambitious and laudable idea of Wikipedia is to make accessible on the Internet all human knowledge produced. The contents of Wikipedia grow by the day proved to be a true movement of collaborative construction.

Online Courses

There are already numerous online courses available on the Internet in Brazil, formal courses (undergraduate and postgraduate) and non-formal offered by different institutions. Under the law the formal courses courses can not be 100% distance, online, they are semi-face courses where most of the distance is done and there's an obligation to face meetings, mainly to the evaluations. If you want to see an online course before the MEC website to see if the institution offering the course is accredited, it does not guarantee the quality of the course but it's minimum requirement for the course is offered. The online courses can be offered in AVAs (Virtual Learning Environments) sophisticated or not. Indeed the technological resources employed in a course does not matter much, no more than the pedagogy adopted. A good course is one that values dialogue and human interaction rather than advanced technology and futile. Be suspicious of courses that hide behind the veneer modern technology. If while doing a course you can feel the teacher, tutotes and classmates 'gifts', as if there is physical distance, the course is good. Now if you feel distant, isolated, finding himself alone in front of a material where almost any human interaction there is suspicion, this course needs to review its educational proposal. In fact the degree of interaction depends on the objectives of the course. There are courses that are designed intentionally focused on content, without interaction or minimal interaction. I personally prefer the online courses that focuses on human interaction.

Google Toolbar

Last but not least, there are the Internet tools offered by Google, the most valuable brand in the world. If you want to enhance their learning on the Internet is worth a User of Google services, you will not pay anything for it, they're all free! The online tools that Google provides are essential for you to manage the progress and process

We present the technological and educational potential in free Virtual Teaching-Learning Environment,
Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment), adopted by MEC as mediator for
Distance Education in federal and technological teaching institutions. To improve constructivist and
constructionist educational activities, attend the psychological, pedagogical, technological, cultural and
pragmatic aspects highlighted by Antonenko et al. (2004). We emphasized the Moodle specificities
highlighting its potential to develop collaborative learning, dialogical interaction, interactivity, different
medias (language) integration and cognitive flexibility around resources and activities. Then, the teacher’s
directivity is necessary in order to the technological and educational potential of Moodle mediated study
activities that allow the active participation, and the teachers and students’ involvement.
